Care InstructionsEnglish willow bats are made from natural wood. Taking some time to get your bat ready before the season begins will help it last longer.
Start by reading the brand’s instructions. Some bats are already oiled or prepared, but you should not use a new bat with a hard ball immediately.
If the bat face is not already oiled, apply a thin layer of raw linseed or bat oil. Avoid getting oil on the stickers or handle.
Let the bat lie flat overnight. In the morning, wipe off any oil that hasn’t soaked in.
Knock in the bat with a bat mallet or an old, good-quality ball. Begin gently and gradually use more force over a few hours.
Roll the edges using the mallet handle. Do not hit the edges directly, and avoid knocking near the handle.
Test your bat in the nets with an old soft ball before using it in a match.
Keep it in a bat cover and your kit bag when not in use.
Store it somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sun.
Wipe the blade with a dry, soft cloth after games, regularly.
Oil lightly when the bat wood looks dry.
Check the edges and toe for cracks at the start of each season.
Don’t over-oil it. Never dip it or make it stand in an oil bowl.
Don’t stand it upright straight after oiling.
Don’t hit the edges square-on or the back of the blade.
Don’t face new, very hard or cheap balls in the early days.
Don’t leave it in a hot car or a damp room.
Small marks or bruises on the edges are normal during play. If a crack gets bigger or the wood starts to lift, stop using the bat and have it repaired.
Always follow the manufacturer’s care label if it says something different.
